One-liners

Pre-approved copy. Use any of these verbatim — variations muddy the product category, and consistent language helps the thing we're defining stick.

Short (15 words)
Every cloud you have. One app. No file downloads. Sery is a universal data gateway.
Medium (30 words)
Sery is a universal data gateway backed by a privacy-respecting data network. Connect every cloud storage you have, preview tables without downloading, run SQL on remote bytes, and ask AI across everything. Files never move.
Long (60 words)
Sery.ai is a universal data gateway with a private data network underneath. The desktop app connects every cloud storage a user has — local, S3, Drive, SFTP, WebDAV, B2, Azure, GCS, Dropbox, OneDrive — and lets them browse, preview tables without downloading, profile, and run SQL on remote bytes. The cloud workspace adds AI chat across all sources and multi-machine search. Files never leave the storage they live in.

Category & positioning

Product category
Universal data gateway + private data network. Sery operates a coordination layer that connects the storage a user already has — without ever holding the file contents. The atoms (your files) stay in the storage that owns them.
One-line sound bite (preferred)
“Every cloud you have. One app. No file downloads.” A universal data gateway with preview-without-download for tabular files and AI on top.
Adjacent categories for context
Cloud-storage browser · Local-first file search · AI data analyst · Multi-device productivity tool
Reference shapes — for analyst orientation only, not as marketing copy
  • Connectivity-network operators— but we share their architecture — coordinate atoms we don't own; ours are files, theirs are packets
  • Edge-network operators— but we share their privacy-by-architecture posture — content-blind by design
  • Payment-network operators— but we share their unit-of-value framing — operate the network rails without owning the funds / files
Categories sometimes confused with us, but different shape
  • OS-level file search— but one-machine-only, no cross-cloud, no AI
  • Cloud AI tools with file upload— but single-file, data uploaded to their cloud
  • Notes apps— but only note-shaped data, no SQL on remote bytes
  • Enterprise log-search platforms— but enterprise-only, data ingestion required
  • Cloud-storage file browsers— but show files but no preview-without-downloading, no SQL, no AI

Background

Use verbatim or adapt the facts. The shape matters more than the individual words — keep the origin and the credibility line.

Short (50 words)
Sery.ai builds a universal data gateway: every cloud storage you have, in one app, with preview without downloading and a private data network underneath. Sery was born out of the frustration of searching across three personal machines for a file that existed somewhere. Based in [city].
Long (120 words)
Sery.ai is a universal data gateway with a private network underneath — connect every cloud storage you have, preview tables without downloading, and ask AI across all of it. The desktop endpoint (Sery Link) is open source under AGPL-3.0; the four extraction kits (scankit, tabkit, mdkit, sery-mcp) ship to crates.io.

Sery started as a personal frustration: working across a MacBook, a Windows desktop, and a NAS, where searching for a single document across all three was nearly impossible. [Short origin anecdote.] An early prototype could query across machines without uploading files. Sery launched publicly in July 2026 with backing from [angels if mentioned].

What's in the screenshot pack

Pack is being captured against v0.8 (current builds). Until it ships, request individual stills via [email protected] — usually back in a day. The list below is the planned shape.

  • sery-welcome.pngFirst-launch screen: "Pick a folder." One click to get started.
  • sery-ask-input.pngThe ask input where every question goes in plain English.
  • sery-file-list-answer.pngA "find" answer showing files across two machines with a machine-column.
  • sery-chart-answer.pngA "tell" answer showing a chart aggregating data across every connected machine.
  • sery-machines-view.pngThe Machines tab showing connected devices, online status, and indexed file counts.
  • sery-connect-modal.pngThe Connect dialog where users paste their workspace key to join a new machine.
  • sery-tray-menu.pngThe macOS tray menu with the "Add Another Machine" item.

Quick-answer FAQ

Reporter questions that come up consistently. Pre-approved answers — quote freely.

What makes Sery different from cloud AI tools that accept file uploads?

Sery doesn't upload your files. Cloud AI tools take one file at a time and process it in their cloud. Sery indexes your files on your own machines and in the storage you connect (S3, Drive, SFTP, etc.), runs queries locally on remote bytes, and only ships schemas and answers over the network. Different problem, different shape.

How does it make money?

The universal data gateway is free forever — connect every cloud storage you have, browse, preview without downloading, profile, search across everything. Users pay $19/month (7-day free trial, no card) for AI chat across all their connected sources, multi- machine workspace, MCP cloud endpoint, and 5 invited collaborators on one bill. The cloud agent + multi-machine fan-out is the only thing behind the paywall; gateway features are always free. No Team or Enterprise tier at launch — we're focused on individuals first.

Is it open-source?

Sery Link is open on GitHub. The backend isn't yet, though the architecture is publicly documented. We'll consider opening more over time.

Why now?

Two things. First, in-process query engines and column-store formats finally make "preview without downloading" credible — reading a Parquet footer over the wire in under two seconds is a 2024-era capability, not 2014. Second, people's personal data has scattered across more clouds than any single tool can browse — typical knowledge worker pays for 3+ storage services and currently has no unified surface.

Who is it for?

The first user is a developer / DevOps engineer / photographer / journalist whose data has scattered across 3+ cloud storage services they pay for (some combination of S3, Drive, B2, SFTP, WebDAV, Azure, GCS, Dropbox, OneDrive). Today they have no single tool to manage them, let alone preview tables or run AI across them. Over time we extend to multi-machine personal users, small professional firms (accountants, lawyers), then regulated vertical SMB.

Who's the competition?

Direct: traditional cloud-storage browsers — they show file lists but make you download everything to look inside, no SQL on remote bytes, no AI. Adjacent: OS-level file search solves single-machine local search but not cross-cloud or AI; sync-style cloud storage duplicates files to a central cloud, which is not Sery's architecture; cloud AI tools with file upload handle one file at a time, not multi-source data analysis. The slot for a universal data gateway with preview-without-download and AI is unfilled — on-device AI from the major OS vendors is the long-term horizon, but none of them solve cross-platform cross-cloud, which is our durable moat.

What's the security model?

Raw files never leave the machines they live on. What travels: schemas, PII-scrubbed sample rows (optional, user-controllable), the user's question, and the result rows. Every outbound packet is logged to a local audit file on the originating machine; users can inspect exactly what was sent, when, from the Privacy tab.

What's next?

Team workspace features for small professional firms, then an embed SDK for vertical SaaS companies to build AI features on Sery's platform. Full roadmap on sery.ai/docs.

Quote-ready lines

Safe-to-paste quotes, pre-approved. Reporters love these because they don't have to wait on an email for a quote.

Your files belong on your machines. Sery is the bridge that lets you search across every device you own without uploading a single file.
We're not competing with cloud AI tools — we're solving the problem they can't. Their model requires uploading. Ours keeps your data where it is.
